Lee Morgan - Live at the Lighthouse

for anyone not in the "know", Lee Morgan is one of the best trumpeters that have graced our dear earth.
he played with almost everybody from the 50's, when he was 19 to '72.
his playing was always soulful and full of feeling - even through his hard use of narcotics. be it the mellower 50s stuff or the wild hard-bop of his later years, he always moves me.
he died aged 33, shot by his good for nothing common law wife, 2 days after his birthday. curses upon her and her offspring for the next 7 generations!
read HERE more about him.

this live set was recorded on July 10-12, 1970.
its is alive with very, VERY long tracks (most are over 13 minutes long), that are modal to an almost painful extent.
i do think Coltrane influenced him.
this live set is not his usually known hard bop, but it is great none the less. if you will notice the tune names you will notice the abundance of psychotics there. the names proide a real feel for the tunes as they have a great excitment to them. his version here of his classic SIDEWINDER is stunning.

to me, he is in equal to these jazz trumpeters - miles, clifford, chet.

miss this at your own peril!
* i will also add more of Lee Morgan's albums in the near future, so lets have requests and comments please.

Jimmy Smith - The Best of the BLUE NOTE Years

taken from an AMAZON review (where you can also buy it - HERE)
Jimmy Smith, the reigning B3 player of all time, was instrumental in ushering in the soul-jazz genre. These cuts show off his talents and the talents of his formidable sidemen. Mostly cuts from 56-60, with one from the 80's, they include some of his best solo work and his blazing speed. The Sermon and Back at the Chicken Shack and The Champ all show why Jimmy Smith reigns supreme and proves that his work influenced much of the music of the 60s and 70s. The end of The Champ could be confused as an Emerson, Lake and Palmer cut! If you've never heard Jimmy Smith before, this is the perfect album to get into his music.
i have nothing interesting to add to this, so....

tracklist (short and sweet)
1. The sermon
2. fungi mama
3. when jhonny comes marching home
4. jumping the blues
5. back at the chicken shack
6. the champ
7. all day long

Saravah Soul - Saravah Soul (2007)

Since this is my first post on ''flat soul spreading'' i would like to thanks 'flatsoul' inviting me to this music supportive effort. The purpose i joined this team is my love for groovy sexy music (ru considering a better reason?). My groovy greetings to soulwarrior funkmaster and jon and to all of you. Hope you enjoy music.
Here we go, first post with an album that i love very very much.
Saravah Soul coming from brazil and their self titled album is their debut.
Half brazilian half british with lyrics both in english and portuguese they move along brazil funk and late 60s funk.
Absolutely mindblowing, grab 'em and give your speakers a hard time

Saravah Soul was created to showcase a highly addictive style of late 60’s Brazilian soul-funk and samba and create an exciting and original live flavour. Talented front man, Frontman Otto Nascarella, from Curitiba in Brazil, combines the showmanship of James Brown with modern breakdance styles, whilst playing guitar and pandeiro; Bass virtuoso Matheus Nova has performed with the likes of Brazilian samba divas Elza Soares and Alcione. Kiris Houston on keys and guitar has worked with top soul artists including Jocelyn Brown and Estelle. Eduardo Marques is one of the most in demand Brazilian drummers in London, and works with top Brazilian artists such as Ed Motta. Percussionist/flautist Jack Yglesias is legendary on the contemporary funk scene, having played with The Poets of Rhythm, Lee Fields, The Soul Destroyers, Quantic Soul Orchestra and Spanky Wilson. The horn section is led by the sax player Marcelo Andrade, who also plays on Jazzinho (Freestyle Records).

We Got The Funk

Over all this is a sort of "beginner's guide" to funk, or more precisely to disco-funk.
this is designed with your booty in full shakedown mode.
At almost 60 tracks (56 really) all in all, this is a fair amount, and each CD is sorted by genre.

Disk 1 goes for the big time floor fillers, starting with the magnificent “We Got The Funk” by Positive force. I’ve heard Danny Krivit open a set with this gem, and boy does it still carry. I’m still hurting :)
Other noted tracks there would be Atmosfear's “Dancing in outer space”, a deeply moving spacey disco track, Osibisia's Sunshine Day and a great live version of Mayfield’s “Freddy's Dead”.
a good solid vocal start the party mood settles over me when i let it play.

disk 2 is mainly about the mellower funk, even though it contains some party corkers - Jimmy James' “I Am Somebody” is one - and worth the entire CD IMO. Add to that the Brothers and Sisters version of “All along the watchtower” and you’ll get the shakes.

disk 3 starts with a great Angie Brown (not to be confused with stone) that does a proto rap/ early disco tune that will mix with rappers delight easily. See, writing this helps me tracklist my next dj set.
Continuing with Johnny “guitar” Watson's “I need it”, Roy ayers' “running away” (a seminal disco funk tune) done live, and more, this is disco funk at its best, but just as you think you have heard it all it arrives when Ruth Copeland does the stones' Gimme Shelter.
if i had to buy the entire set just for this one tune, which i happen to have done, i would do it again.
8.01 minutes of pure dancefloor magic, and it has the LONGEST EVER break. Great for bars, but sadly i cant use it while clubbing.

Over all, the feel is a that of a complete set of funk, oriented towards the more danceable area of disco and soul.
if you’re down, and feeling blue… just pick it, and turn it loose!

*regrettably the tracks are all WMAs, but they work just fine.

Electric Mojo

hi there everyone,
with our great flat souler going to the army (just remember to duck when fired upon) and his request for help, i had but one choice - and answered the call to arms.

as my first post, i have chosen to add the ELECTRIC MOJO series of compilations.
there has been already a complete post of the entire Mojo Club series here (lucky 13 in all), but they have also released these 3 compilations, dating from 1997 onwards.
They contain many classic tunes and club hits of a well, electric nature. you cant have a club night, even such as this one, without any new "electronic" music, now can you?

the vibe of these is not electronic as in "housey" but more into the funky , jazzy beats you'd expect there.

Kon & Amir , DJ Muro - The Kings of Diggin'

Kon & Amir , DJ Muro - The Kings of Diggin' (Rapster 2006)

A two-disc album of rare tracks found and made available thanks to the crate-digging work (and then the subsequent selection process) of Kon & Amir and DJ Muro, The Kings of Diggin' is a good example of why so many DJs spend hours and hours in record stores, looking for obscure, out of print vinyl. Both Kon and Amir, who compiled and mixed the first disc, give brief explanations of their tracks in the liner notes (it must be an outdated version, however, as the Tyrone & Carr and Soseme Makonde songs are missing information, while there are two, the Trinidad Tripoli Steelband and the TnT Band, for which Amir gives nice descriptions -- though neither actually shows up on the record), and the music varies from Brazilian funk to jazz but never steps too far out of the range of something that seems like it could easily be sampled by hip-hop producers and that an MC could rhyme over. The focus, of course, is on the beat (made not only by drums but also bass and guitar), the same idea that is also heard on disc two, which, unlike the first one, generally consists of one- to two-minute song clips (38 in all) mixed expertly together by Japan's DJ Muro. Again, the selection stays mostly within the jazz-funk realm, but there are also ventures into R&B (Tony Middleton's "Return to Spanish Harlem"), easy pop (the Bob Crewe Generation's "Menage a Trois"), disco (the Disco Fox's "The Fox"), and Latin (Palmeira's "Tapajos"). Together, The Kings of Diggin' is enough to make nearly anyone -- DJ or not -- run to the nearest record store and start looking for new things to add to his or her collection.
