Soul Fire Records - Up From the Vaults, Vol. 1

Following on the heels of Soul Fire's two Grazing in the Trash singles comps, Up From the Vaults, Vol. 1 continues the task of collecting the down-and-dirty funk revival label's limited-edition 45 rpm records for CD release. It's the best various-artists collection the label has yet offered, boasting a wider, more colorful range of carefully re-created vintage funk sounds. Where the shadow of the J.B.'s and Meters once loomed large over most of Soul Fire's output, their 45s have exhibited considerable growth, as this collection demonstrates. Of course, there's still some great classic-style funk courtesy of returning '70s veterans the Herb Johnson Settlement and the Detroit Sex Machines, but the fun comes from the changes of pace. There are Latin boogaloo-style grooves from Bronx River Parkway, bubbling Hammond-organ funk from WQLJ, revivalist Afro-beat by Massak, a perky rap (in the pre-hip-hop sense of the term) from female soul singer Mauri Bailey, and some groovy trumpet and sax soloing courtesy of the El Michels Affair. Add to that the label's increasing penchant for borderline stoner grooves, both laid-back (the Fabulous Three) and stompingly heavy (the Whitefield Brothers' excellent "Chokin'"), and you've got a document that bodes extremely well for the future of Soul Fire and of the deep funk revival in general. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Super Breaks Vol.1: Essential Jazz Soul & Funk Breakbeats

Without any doubt this is a fine compilation of some truly outstanding tracks, if you've got your funk on then you will be well served by most of what's on offer here. Rock creek park (in particular) is a soul-funk anthem of legendary status, and the detroit emeralds (baby let me take you) are a much underrated outfit capable of superbly laid back grooves and pleasing ,mellow vocals.This album has the ORIGINAL recordings from which all the classic cuts where taken. Its a real winner and guaranteed to be in the top 10 of anyones collection.

These songs all have breaks, have been sampled like crazy, and are essential additions to your break beat collection. The following tracks have pure drum/percussion breaks:

Most of the other tunes feature drums with perhaps a bass line, or simple instrumental playing overtop - hence they are breaks.
Many of these tracks have appeared on bootleg vinyl compilations like Ultimate Breaks and Beats, or have been a favorite of DJs, producers with samplers and their rap artists. The one song that seems out of place is 'Be Thankful For What You Got', which has had vocal snippets sampled from it, but the beat (drum and light organ section that is the intro to Pt 2) isn't really something that would be part of a DJs vinyl arsenal at a scratch/mix competition.
This set is essential not just for people who are into songs with breaks, but also those who remember the good old days of hip hop sampling and recognize many of these tunes from their sampled beats and hooks.

Super Breaks Vol.3: Essential Jazz Soul & Funk Breakbeats

The third volume of Super Breaks maintains the high standards set by this series in several ways: the quality of the material, eclecticism of the tracks within a '60s and '70s soul-funk-jazz crossover spectrum, and mixture of obscure songs by stars with obscure tunes by just plain obscure artists. Although cuts by Marvin Gaye, the Coasters, and Sly & the Family Stone are found here, none of them are the ones you're likely to hear on oldies stations, or even noncommercial specialist programs. Gaye's "T Plays It Cool" is wiggly, futuristic instrumental funk from his early-'70s soundtrack to Trouble Man, for instance, while the Coasters' "Soul Pad" is goofy modern soul from 1967 and Sly & the Family Stone's "Trip to Your Heart" is from their relatively unheralded debut Epic album. True, some of this disc is 1970s funk, some from leading lights like Funkadelic and the Bar Kays. Yet there are unpredictable side trips to artists few would dare to include on such thematic comps, like the spacy jazz-funk cut "The Rose" from San Francisco late-'60s psychedelic cult band Fifty Foot Hose, the fusion cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Jimmy Ponder, mid-'70s fusion from Hampton Hawes, and an excellent 1964 sorrowful girl group-soul ballad by Wendy Rene (selected due to its being sampled by Wu Tang Clan on "Tearz"). If you're looking for more well-known samples here, bits of Johnny Jenkins' "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" were appropriated for both Beck's "Loser" and Oasis' "Go Let It Out." If you're not looking for samples (though the modern records that have sampled these tracks are detailed in the liner notes), it's still a good collection of off the beaten track music, if a little erratic and occasionally mundane. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

The New Mastersounds

The New Mastersounds are a world-class, world renowned, instrumental funk band with 7 years of live performing, 5 full-length album releases and 21 seven-inch single releases under their belt. NMS are Eddie Roberts (guitar & tambourine), Pete Shand (bass), Simon Allen (drums), and Bob Birch (Hammond). All four of them met in Leeds, UK, and, as a BBC reviewer says, "NMS may produce some confusion: how can a collection of (mostly) pasty-faced Northerners produce with such authority the dusty funk grooves of the early 70s? It doesn't matter - they just do."

In the late 1990's, guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts was running a club night in Leeds called "The Cooker." When The Cooker moved into a new venue with a second floor in 1999, there was space and the opportunity to put a live band together to complement the DJ sets. Roberts and Allen had played together in 1997 as The Mastersounds, though with a different bassist and no organ. Through friends and the intimate nature of the Leeds music scene, Shand and Birch were added on bass and Hammond respectively, and The New Mastersounds were born. Though it was raw and more of a boogaloo sound at first, it was powerful from the start. Their first rehearsal was hot enough for Blow it Hard Records to release it as an EP in 2000.

As a band, and as individuals, they have since clocked up collaborations with an impressive array of musicians DJs and producers, including: Lou Donaldson (Blue Note), Corinne Bailey Rae (EMI), Quantic (Tru Thoughts), Carleen Anderson, Keb Darge & Kenny Dope (Kay Dee Records), John Arnold (Ubiquity), Mr Scruff (Ninja Tune), Snowboy (Ubiquity), Fred Everything (2020vision), Andy Smith (Portishead), Norman Jay MBE, James Taylor (JTQ), Adrian Gibson (Freestyle), LSK (Faithless), The Greyboy Allstars and Karl Denson.

The band has toured all over the USA and Japan and, closer to home, in France and Spain. In August 2006 they finished recording their fifth album, 102%, which was released in January 2007.

As an example of the respect this band commands, Peter Wermelinger - DJ, collector, and author of the crate-diggers’ bible ‘The Funky & Groovy Music Lexicon’ - places the 2001 NMS track ‘Turn This Thing Around’ in his all-time top-ten tunes, along with the likes of Eddie Harris, Funkadelic, and Herbie Hancock.

The New Mastersounds are at the very top of an elite selection of acts that bring the true soul out of funk.

Keb Darge Presents... (Deep Funk Records, 2001; reissued Cooker Records, 2003)

After many years of spearheading the UK's live funk scene and packing out the best clubs everywhere from London to Mexico City, The New Mastersounds captured the pure energy and excitement of their live show onto this, their debut album release. Dropped by the likes of DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, Cut Chemist, Kenny Dope, Spinna, Keb Darge, Gilles Peterson, Snowboy, Adrian Gibson, and crossing over into the dance scene with their Masters At Work-inspired track 'Nervous' and an inspired arrangement of the theme from James Bond, the interest generated on release of this album was huge. Originally released on Keb Darge's classic Deep Funk label in 2001, it quickly sold out to funk aficionados everywhere.

Be Yourself (One Note Records, 2003)

The New Mastersounds return with another funk album of classic proportions. Be Yourself sounds like it was recorded live, with its no-messing; let-the-music-speak-for-itself production (as it would?ve been in the 70s). The tunes have a refreshing quality that don't tend to focus on one theme throughout, covering a multitude of tempos and styles including jazz, funk and soul. Whether it be the crisp, rolling drums or the intricate guitar work, and not forgetting the Booker-T style Hammond organ, it's extremely difficult to pin-point a standout instrument or musician. With that in mind one has to conclude that it's ALL GOOD. It surely won't be long before they're seen up there with the likes of Grant Green and the Meters.

This Is What We Do (One Note Records, 2005)

Needless to say, the album is a full on funk monster, with the hammond taking a greater role in the proceedings. NO VOCALS, just awesome instrumentals. Stand out tracks, for me, are the latin-tinged 'Tin Drum', the speed-funk 'Ain't No Telling' (Bob is outstanding on this track!) and 'Pure'. Who's the Elvis fan? MARVELLOUS!

It won't take long -- maybe ten seconds into the first cut -- to know that the Meters are a primary influence on the U.K.'s New Mastersounds. The opening title track is such a ringer for "Cissy Strut" that you may check your CD sleeve to see if the discs weren't accidentally swapped. As the album unwinds, though, the all-instrumental quartet reveals more of its own identity: a sort of acid jazz mixed with crisp early-'70s funk grabbed from New Orleans' finest. Certainly drummer Simon Allen has been practicing to his Zigaboo Modeliste records, and it's his attack that principally drives the sound. The interplay between organ and Eddie Roberts' guitar carries the melody, but this band's motor is powered by its formidable rhythm section. Despite the Meters fixation, the New Mastersounds marry a somewhat retro approach with a contemporary spin that makes this fusion perfect for Austin Powers lovers. There is no denying that these guys bring the Southern funk, but the mix of their Brit jazz sensibilities and chops fine-tuned for maximum danceability spins the music in a unique direction. There's also more than a little Booker T. & the MG's here, especially in guitarist Roberts' sparse, choppy leads that echo those of Steve Cropper. What's most impressive, though, is how the band locks together. No member hogs the spotlight as these 14 tightly arranged zingers, most of them hovering just over three minutes, trim off the fatty jam tendencies that often sink similar combos by concentrating on compressed licks that kick out of the speakers with terse precision. The group shifts into pseudo psychedelics on the closing "Paranoid (Is It Any Wonder?)" as Roberts approximates a Cream-era Clapton-styled distortion that doesn't entirely resonate but at least shows a willingness to experiment and push boundaries. A few stabs at a lounge style also come up rather short, but the snappy funk is never more than a track away. Guest reedman Rob Lavers adds some old Crusaders-type horn work on a few songs, assisting a band that's already as in the pocket as they come.

Re:Mixed (Record Kicks, 2007)

Record Kicks label asked a bunch of talented contemporary funk, nu jazz and broken soul remixers to work on NMS's "raw" deep funk sound. The result is NMS RE::MIXED an absolutely essential compilation full of irresistible nu funk, soul, broken, headz future classics.
Since everybody loves NMS it was easy to welcome so many great producers on one record. From Gilles Peterson jazz award winner Nostalgia 77 together with fabulous Corinne Bailey Rae to "king" Kenny Dope. From Lack Of Afro (Freestyle Records) to Tru Thoughs bandito Dielser here together with sensational Laura Vane. Not to mention Lanu aka Lance Ferguson from the The Bamboos, Ju Ju Orchestra aka the grooviest band in the international club jazz, mighty Smoove from Acid Jazz Records, from Holland nu afrobeat phenomenon AIFF (Unique Records), Dj Farrapo, Montreal's Afrokats Records crew - and many more.

Poets of Rhythm

German funk band Poets of Rhythm began in Munich after friends Boris Geiger and Jan Weissenfeldt were first exposed to the raw funk that came out of the U.S. in the late '60s and early '70s. Soon, they decided to form their own group, and with Geiger on percussion and vocals, Weissenfeldt on guitar, his brother Max on drums, and Jan Krause on bass, they started writing their own material. After releasing their first single, "Funky Train," in 1992, the Poets' (who had by now added Till Sahm on organ, Michael Voß on trumpet, and Malte Müller-Egloff on alto sax) debut full-length, Practice What You Preach, came out (it was later reissued in 2006 on Daptone). More 7"s came in the following years, though they were often credited to groups like the Pan-Atlantics, Organized Raw Funk, Bus People Express, the Woo Woo's, and the Soul-Saints Orchestra.

Though the bandmembers had already begun to make a name for themselves in Europe thanks to their brand of hard funk that was heavily indebted to important outfits like the Meters and Parliament, they had yet to have much exposure in the States. That changed when Quannum's Lyrics Born found one of their singles in a record store in New Orleans and was impressed by what he heard, though he knew nothing about the group. By chance, when Latyrx's debut came out in 1997, LB got into contact with Jan Weissenfeldt, who was distributing The Album in Germany. The next year, when the MC was looking to record solo material, he went to the Poets of Rhythm for backup help and in 1999 "I Changed My Mind," a minor hit in the Bay Area, came out. The Poets' true sophomore record (they had issued label "compilations," which mostly consisted of tracks from their various incarnations), Discern/Define, featured nearly the same lineup as before -- Wolfgang Schlick took over on sax and added flute as well -- was released on Quannum in 2001. What Goes 'Round came out the following year on Shadow, and the band also showed up on the song "The Bay" from Lyrics Born's 2005 album Same !@#$ Different Day.

The Poets of Rhythm are a live funk and groove band from Munich, Germany whose approach to funk music is down and dirty. Though often classified as acid jazz, The Poets music doesn’t follow the heavily produced trend of the acid jazz genre, opting instead for a dirtier sound.

After releasing a string of singles for the Hotpie and Candy label and one hard to find LP on Soulciety Records, the Poets of Rhythm come correct on this long overdue worldwide release on Quannum Projects.
Founded a decade ago in Munich, Germany, these innovators in the rare groove style are seven and sometimes eight musicians deep with lead vocalist/percussionist/musical director Boris "Bo Baral" Geiger; guitarist/musical director JJ Whitfield; bassist Jan Krause ; organ/moog stimulator Till Sahm ; alto saxophonist Malte Muller-Egloff; alto-saxophonist Wolfgang Schlick; trumpet player Treetop; and drummer Max Whitfield.

After raising eyebrows on the "I Changed My Mind" single on the Quannum Spectrum recording backing up Lyrics Born and riding the wave of interest from early-21st century hip-hop fans in old-school funk and James Brown -era breakbeat, Discern/Define modernizes space jazz over big-beat, soul harmonies, and kinky guitar rhythms with psychedelic tendencies. But the luscious music aside, the overwhelming production by the Soul-Saints is what distinguishes this record from other faceless funk records put out in the '90s and the early 2000s.

With earthy room sounds that compliment the organic nature of the drums and bass with just a slight hint of feedback, all the best elements of classic soul and the liveliness of live hip-hop are blended together to give the record a timeless quality.

What Goes 'Round (Shadow 2002)

The bad news about this German funk ensemble is that it's shamelessly rewriting James Brown. But that's also the good news -- after all, Brown himself isn't doing it anymore, and a world without this sort of raw, horn-heavy, hip-shaking funk is no kind of world for anyone to have to live in. So really, to acknowledge that there's not a single original horn stab, guitar cluck, vocal grunt, or rimshot to be found anywhere on this album is not to criticize it, but to celebrate it. The majority of this program is a reissue of the band's 1993 release, Practice What You Preach; two additional tracks were previously issued as part of the 1995 compilation Original Raw Soul, Vol. 1. As you might expect, there's no discernible difference in sound or style between the two periods; every song is a straightforward throwback to James Brown's glory days in the 1960s, with intricate cross-rhythms bobbing and weaving around the funky horn lines and singers shouting catch phrases and exhortations to the band. Only the two slow tunes -- an awful number called "What You Doing" and a marginally better one titled "It Came Over Me" -- drag the proceedings down. Recommended overall.

Practice What You Preach (Daptone 2006)

Arguably the pioneers of the new heavy funk movement, Munich's own, Poets of Rhythm, recorded this debut album in 1993, years before Desco, Daptone, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, or any of the rest of us ever got covered in the filth of raw funk. However, Practice What You Preach can be measured beyond the modern scene and stands tall as one of the great full length Funk-Soul albums of all time.

The Desco Funk 45' Collection - Spike's Choice 1&2

The new funk movement that is currently represented by Big Daddy, Stark Reality and Poets of Rhythm owes a debt to Desco Records. One of the key players in popularizing live funk for a new generation, the New York label specialized in limited-issue 45s of new acts until its closure in 2000. As each single was limited to 500 copies, they sold out quickly, making it nearly impossible to build a complete collection. Thankfully, Spike's Choice brings together the first twelve singles in their entirety in one handy CD.

The dominant influences here are boogaloo and James Brown, as will be made clear by the Sugarman Three, Lee Fields and Sharon Jones, all of whom are decisively retro in their approach. Hard drums, honking sax, and strident vocals are hallmarks of the Desco sound, erupting to life on "Soul Jasper" by house band Soul Providers and Jones' low-down cover of JB's "I Got the Feeling." Ravi Harris and his Prophets offer a trippy alternative brand of funk on "Thunderbird" and "Path of the Blazing Sarong." These sides are simply some of the funkiest released in the last ten years. Spike's Choice is a crucial document of the resurgence of funk.
Classic '70s-style funk enjoyed a massive resurgence in popularity during the '90s, not only providing the basis for the vast majority of hip-hop recorded during the decade, but also becoming a party music of choice on college campuses otherwise dominated by politically correct alternative rock; moreover, funky jazz acts like Medeski, Martin & Wood moved into the good graces of neo-hippie, jam-band audiences, and even most alternative metal bands bore some semblance of the music's stamp, thanks to predominantly rock-oriented acts like Faith No More and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. So it's somewhat surprising, even with the advent of sampling technology, that a full-scale funk revival movement, centered around old-school bands who played live instruments, never quite took shape. Thankfully, the New York-based Desco Records, founded by Philippe Lehman and Gabriel Roth, moved in to fill that vacuum in 1997, releasing a series of 45 rpm records devoted to funk of every flavor. The company moved into the CD market in 1998, and anyone who missed out on those vinyl issues can easily catch up with Spike's Choice: The Desco Funk 45 Collection, which collects the A and B sides of the company's first 12 singles. The dominant influence here is James Brown, both in the straight-ahead, late-'60s-style funk of singers like Sharon Jones, Joseph Henry, and the masterful Lee Fields, and the J.B.'s-derived instrumentals by the Other Side and the label's house band, the Soul Providers. Elsewhere, the groundbreaking Ravi Harris and the Prophets deliver a trancey, sitar-driven variation on the sound, and the Sugarman Three proffer a greasy brand of soul-jazz boogaloo reminiscent of artists like Lou Donaldson. It's all performed live, and it all sounds astoundingly authentic and organic, which makes this already enjoyable music even more infectious. Whether the singles collected on Spike's Choice prove to be the start of something big or not, they stand on their own as some of the funkiest of the decade.

Spike's Choice, Vol. 2 is the second CD collection of funk-revival label Desco's terrific limited-edition 45s, featuring the A- and B-sides of eight singles (all tracks are making their CD debuts). Aside from the Sugarman Three (who cover Lou Donaldson's "Turtle Walk") and Joseph Henry (who guests as lead vocalist for the otherwise instrumental, Meters-influenced Mighty Imperials), none of the acts were present on the first volume of Spike's Choice. The Daktaris open the collection with their brand of Fela Kuti-style Afro-funk, and there's old-style Southern soul from Naomi Davis and the Knights of 41st Street, who welcome guest organist Cliff Driver. Perhaps the most intriguing discovery, though, is the insane energy of the Unstoppable S. Robinson and His Marvelaires. The collection is highly recommended for old-school funk fans hungry for new material in the genre, especially those who enjoyed the first volume.

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra

Antibalas (from the Spanish for "bulletproof") is the spirit of Afrobeat reincarnated as a hard-hitting collective of musicians in New York City. The group carries on the soul of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, founder of the unique Afrobeat sound, which unites highlife, jazz, funk, and traditional African elements with unabashed political messages. Antibalas-which means "anti-bullets" or "bullet-proof"-shoots out monstrous horns and bass layered over polyrhythmic beats coupled with furious lyrics inciting insurrection in English, Yoruba, and Spanish.

Antibalas formed in 1998 from members of Desco Records' Soul Providers and the Daktaris. They were quickly joined by like-minded New York musicians active in the worlds of jazz, rock, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and Brazil. The union of Latinos, whites, African Americans, Africans, and Asian Americans is based in Brooklyn, NYC.
Over the next few years, the band's presence grew; by summer 2000 Antibalas had released their first album "Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1" and had toured twice in England, all the while continuing to play at venues throughout New York City. Recording with the group in the early day was Cameroonian drummer Jojo Kuo who can be heard on the studio recordings of "Uprising" and "Machete."

By early 2002, the horn-driven outfit had released their second album, "Talkatif," and were continuing to tour throughout the United States. In summer 2004, their third studio album, "Who is This America?" was released. Antibalas' most recent album, "Security", was produced by John McEntire and released on the ANTI- label in 2007.

With fifteen band members, Antibalas-which is run as a collective-cannot easily be described in a traditional biography. The group's players come from such diverse professional, cultural, and personal backgrounds that only a spray of bullets can shed light on the foundation of this musical insurrection.The group has received guest visits from several musicians from Fela Kuti's Afrika 70 and Egypt 80 bands, including Tony Allen (drums), Femi Kuti (alto sax), Seun Kuti (tenor sax), Tunde Williams (trumpet), Oghene Kologbo (guitar), Nicolas Addey (congas), Dele Sosimi (keyboards), Ola Jagun (drums/percussion), and Jojo Kuo (drums) among others.

Antibalas has performed in 23 countries, from Japan to Turkey to Portugal, throughout New York City, from Central Park Summerstage to Rikers Island prison facility.

Formed by breaks fanatic Miles Tackett, Breakestra is a constantly morphing hip-hop orchestra based in Los Angeles. The group came together in 1997-1997 around Tackett's DJ gigs at a coffeehouse. A multi-instrumentalist whose work on cello has appeared on recordings by B.B. King, Macy Gray, and Black Eyed Peas, Tackett was a funk fan who got into hip-hop during the late '80s -- courtesy of the Ultramagnetic classic Critical Beatdown -- when he realized it was keeping the funk flame alive.

A wish to play instrumental hip-hop in a band context brought the group together, and the band that became The Breakestra came together ,led by Tackett: Josh "Wallet" Cohen on drums, Geoff "Double G" Gallegos on sax and flute, Todd Simon and Paul Vargas on trumpet, Dan Osterman on trombone, Carlos Guaico on keys, Davy Chegwidden on percussion, Dan Ubick on guitar, Soulsister Demya and Mixmaster Wolf on vocals and Tackett himself on bass, upright cello and vocals. Their club night, Root Down, brought in crowds, along with the cream of the rap underground (Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Company Flow, DJ Shadow, Freestyle Fellowship), and their first single, "Getcho Soul Togetha," appeared on Stones Throw in 1999.

That year also brought an intriguing demo called The Live Mix Tape -- including Breakestra covers of a host of deep funk classics -- but an official release (as The Live Mix, Pt. 1) waited until 2001 and only appeared in Japan. The second volume followed later that year, and was released on Stones Throw. In 2005 Breakestra recorded a single, Family Rap, featuring Chali 2na and Soup from Jurassic 5 and Double K from People Under the Stairs, and also released their third studio album, Hit the Floor, on Ubiquity Records, with a nearly entirely different lineup.
