Gozalo Bugalu Tropical Vol.1 (Vampisoul 2007)

A killer batch of boogaloo material -- but not from the usual sources! Although boogaloo is a genre normally associated with the New York scene at the end of the 60s, the music here all hails from Peru and represents a great new sound -- music inspired by the Nuyorican originals, but which often take things into whole new directions! The Peruvian approach to boogaloo is a bit looser than the New York one -- a bit more open and free, and often heavily touched by jazz music as well, resulting in a sound that's also got plenty of hard-jamming descarga elements too! Given the racial makeup of the Peruvian scene, there's a bit less soul influence going on too -- lyrics are more often in Spanish, and less inspired by the Harlem sound -- but the overall rhythms still share plenty with the Latin soul styles of New York, and provide a great foil for some of the jazzy instrumentation. This package is a massive discovery in music -- one that goes way beyond some of the few Peruvian Latin titles from the time that have been reissued -- and it's overflowing with amazing work that's totally new to our ears! A second amazing set of grooves from the Peruvian scene of the 60s -- upbeat Latin sides that easily rival the greatness of work at the time from New York, Colombia, or Puerto Rico! The Peruvian approach is a bit different than the rest -- often a hybrid of outside influences, recast slightly with some local flavor -- in ways that make these tunes sound a fair bit different than 60s Latin on Fania or Tico -- which makes for a very fresh sound throughout! Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

By the sound of them, you would think Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings started making funk-threaded soul music together in the 1960s. Few devotedly retro acts are as convincing. Few singers as skilled as Sharon Jones at stuffing notes with ache and meaning might be willing to invest in a sound so fully occupied by the likes of Bettye LaVette and Tina Turner in the Ike years, too. But what Jones brings to the funkified table has legs of its own -- eight of them, to be exact -- and they belong to Binky Griptite, Bugaloo Velez, Homer Steinweiss, and Dave Guy -- her Dap-Kings.

Jones, like James Brown, was born in Augusta, GA; there she sang in her church choir, and from fellow parishioners picked up the kind of back-patting she needed to convince her to go mainstream. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Brooklyn, where she immersed herself in 1970s disco and funk with an eye toward cutting a record of her own. Instead, studios came calling and with them steady work -- by her twenties, Jones was turning in backup vocals for gospel, soul, disco and blues artists, most of it uncredited. In the '80s, however, Jones' sound was deemed unfashionable, and instead of pushing ahead with her soul diva's dream she went back to church singing. She also took a job as a corrections officer at New York's Rykers Island.

It wouldn't be until 1996 that Desco Records would rediscover Jones' sweat-basted, lived-in talent. With that label's house band, the Soul Providers, Jones released several singles in the late '90s; their warmth and genuineness propelled the act across the Atlantic, and Jones picked up a moniker -- the queen of funk -- that stuck. Jones released her first full-length with the Dap-Kings, Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, after signing with Daptone Records in 2002. Years of touring behind it, as well as cutting singles with other artists (including Greyboy) ensued. In 2005, Jones reteamed with the Dap-Kings for the winking groovefest that is Naturally. With it, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings proved that, no matter how late in the game, they are hell-bent on breathing life back into boiled-down funk and soul.

Dap Dippin (Daptone 2002)

It's hard to believe that Sharon Jones' debut LP is a product of the year 2002, for several reasons. Given the excellent singles she recorded for Desco beginning in the late '90s, it seems like she would have gotten the opportunity for a full-length sooner; plus, her brand of raw, heavy, hard-driving funk is such a throwback to the '70s, and she pulls it off so well, that you wonder how she could have escaped that decade without at least a few rare, classic 45s (in the vein of labelmate Lee Fields). It's not hard to believe she once made her living as a prison guard, based on the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense performances she belts out on Dap Dippin' With Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the first full-length release on Desco's descendant, Dap-Tone. Backed by the Dap-Tone house band (a conglomeration of studio pros with connections reaching back to the Desco orbit), Jones delivers a storming set of tunes that would have sounded perfectly at home on the James Brown's Original Funky Divas compilation. The style and quality are pretty consistent all the way through, but it's hard not to single out the nearly unrecognizable cover of Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately," which is transformed into a churning blast of funk full of biting guitars (and nary a synth or drum machine in sight). Other highlights include the chunky leadoff track, "Got a Thing on My Mind," the would-be dance-craze "The Dap Dip," the slow-burning "Make It Good to Me," and the trials-and-tribulations tale "Ain't It Hard." Plus, label head Gabriel Roth throws in his usual "authentic" trappings -- the fake live introduction running down Jones' "hits," the intentionally dated copy on the back cover -- that make the whole package even more fun. All in all, a terrific debut.

Naturally (Daptone 2005)

100 Days, 100 Nights (Daptone 2007)

After the often upbeat, always exciting sounds of 2005's Naturally, the band's next outing comes off as a slightly more tempered affair. The title track opens with an indefatigable statement of purpose, dropping into a late-stage, sub-halftime groove so Jones can fully "take [her] time" lamenting her missing man. Elsewhere, her voice effortless treads the heights and depths of its range with timeless aplomb. At times, these tracks court the uninspired flavor of the wholly derivative, but in all, 100 Days, 100 Nights makes for a very welcome addition to any avid listener's contemporary soul music library.

Orgone

With a lively, evocative set of covers and original material, Los Angeles-based ensemble Orgone brought new attention to the funk revivalist and jam band circuits when they launched their recording career with Ubiquity Records in the mid- to late 2000s.
Orgone's sound hosts a myriad groove-oriented styles, including but not limited to deep funk, '60s Memphis soul/blues, Fela-inspired Afro-beat, hip-hop, Latin jazz, and electronic dance and house. Many of the band's musicians started playing together in the early '90s, but Orgone did not develop into a tight-knit ensemble until the end of the decade. The core lineup of the band eventually came to consist of Sergio Rios (guitar), Dan Hastie (Rhodes, clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ), Sean O'Shea (drums), Ethan Phillips (bass), Stewart Killen (various percussion), Darren Cardoza (trombone), Devin Williams (trumpet), and Joel Bowers (saxophone).
Other than working live jam sessions, Orgone mainly backed hip-hop acts on tour or in the studio until around 2001 when bandmembers saw vocalist Fanny Franklin perform with L.A.-based hip-hop orchestra Dakah. With Franklin added to the mix, the funk jam band was more eager to make its own recordings, cutting one of their earliest songs, a cover of the Beginning of the End's '70s funk hit "Funky Nassau," for Ubiquity compilation Rewind! 4 (2004). While Orgone served as the on-stage band for the likes of Little Brother, the Pharcyde, Pharoahe Monch, and Tone-Loc, Ubiquity issued their I Get Lifted 12" and The Duck Gravy 7" in spring 2007. All of these singles appeared on their debut album, The Killion Floor, released later that October

A monstrous debut from one of the heaviest acts we've heard in years -- LA's Orgone, easily one of the most up-and-coming funky combos around! Although Orgone share a bit with some of the leaner deep funk groups who've cropped up in the past decade or so, they've also got a sound that's a bit more advanced overall -- sort of that second-generation approach to funk that hit the scene by the mid 70s, as some of the bigger funk acts like Black Heat or War moved out of the indie scene and really started to hit a wider audience! That doesn't mean that Orgone's commercial at all -- because they've got a sound that's still as sharp-edged as any smaller group -- but with a lineup that's quite large, they're able to encompass a very wide range of soulful styles -- gritty 45 riffing, slinky Chicano-styled grooves, Afro Funk, tighter soul tracks, and lots lots more -- all carried off with perfection throughout. The album feels like some lost masterpiece on Fantasy, or possibly some overlooked early 70s major label funk set on WEA or United Artists -- and titles include "Who Knows Who", "I Get Lifted", "Funky Nassau", "Lone Ranger", "Prism Break", "Crabby Ali", "Duck & Cover", "Dialed Up", "Said & Done", "Hambone", "It's What You Do", "Do Your Thing", and "Sophisticated Honky".

Lefties Soul Connection

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the Lefties Soul Connection sound is the word ‘RAW’. Sound and music wise the band is influenced by funk acts like the Meters and the JB's, but also by hip-hop acts like for example Jurassic 5, the Roots and Beastie Boys. In general they have their backbone in the raw (obscure) funk & soul from the 60s till early 70s but a lot of tracks are based on hip-hop feel/sound/structure (open drum breaks, ready to sample riffs). They also have some '(mod) rock' influence in their sound, this can be especially seen and heard at live concerts and you can hear it in the aggressiveness of their sound. Their goal is to rock the crowd hard with heavy beats, low bumping bass, screaming Hammond organ and tight guitar riffs, sometimes accompanied by vocals or chants.

The band is not strictly a retro band, they're not trying to copy an old soul/funk band; an important difference with some other (raw) funk & soul bands of today. It's not their intention to play funk exactly the same like the JB’s or the Meters used to do. These bands will always be the best because it's the sound they've created. Lefties Soul Connection just picked up some of their grooves and philosophy and mixed it with hip-hop breakbeat / song structure and (mod) rock aggressive sound/performance style. What you get is an explosive performance with tight grooves and the heaviest live beats you ever heard (we like to call it the "shock 'n' awe" style or garage funk).

Slowly they've been building a fan base within the international (raw) funk & soul (bboy) community with their sound and especially at performances but, because they're not strictly retro, they also broke out of this scene and got noticed by people that are more into hip-hop and even rock and dance. A good example of a track getting noticed outside the funk community is their interpretation of Organ Donor, a dj Shadow track (sound clip: http://www.leftiessoulconnection.com/organdonorreviews.htm).
A large part of their recordings is instrumental. Basically they've set up the band similar to the Meters and Booker T & the MG's. Like these bands, their music is centred around groove/sound and not so much lyrics/a singer. At live shows though, more vocal tracks are added. These tracks are sung by guitar player Onno Smit; before starting the band together with Alviz also a soul singer.

Hutspot (Excelsior Recordings 2006)

If you consider yourself a soul and funk fan or collector it is not unlikely that your are familiar with some of the songs on this album. That is because Hutspot is not so much the first 'real' album of Lefties Soul Collection but a collection of singles that the band has released over the last three years. Since all of those singles have been limited vinyl only releases, the music will still be new to most listeners outside of the elusive soul or funk 45 fraternity.

As much as we like our homemade 'raers' we also believe that the music of the Amsterdam-based Lefties Soul Connection appeals to a wider audience than those die-hard fans who hunt their vinyl in thrift stores and online-shops around the globe. Nothing proofs this better than the ever growing number of concert goers who catch the Lefties bug at one of their live shows. Alviz, Onno, Bram and Cody love to perform and have become one of the hardest working raw funk & soul bands on the circuit.

In 2005 alone they have played everywhere from the Jazz Cafe in London to the 'Supernatural' festival in Utrecht and numerous clubs from Berlin to Marseille. Wherever they play, their raw and heavy sound never fails to set the place on fire. The Lefties need no gimmick, no flash. They just let the music speak for itself: from Alviz' squeaky hammond organ to Onno's ruff & scratchy guitar to Bram's bumping bass and to Cody's hard hitting drums.

Amsterdam may not be known for gritty funk and soul but the diversity, drive and spirit of this great city is in many ways reflected in their music. Even though the Lefties' sound is rooted in the classic funk of bands like the Meters, they are not trapped in the past. Lefties Soul Connection are a band of today creating songs for the year 2006 and beyond. Cody's deadly drum-breaks and Bram's bass lines keep dancers and hip-hop producers equally happy. The raw energy of their music (all recorded on an analog 4 track tape machine at their rehearshal studio) follows no rules and you will never catch them on stage pretending it is 1969 again. The Lefties believe that you have to create your own brand of funk in order to keep the music alive. So when they started recording they didn't do any cover versions. A decision that proved them right from start. Their first single, the self-penned Doin' The Thing was an immediate success and has been called a new funk classic by many. Three more singles Bouncing Ball, V2 and Peacock Strut followed before the Lefties finally decided to put two classics from their live sets on vinyl: the Isley Brothers / Meters medley It's Your Thing / Hey Pocky A-Way and DJ Shadow's Organ Donor.

Skimming The Skum (Melting Pot Music 2007)

The Amsterdam collective Lefties Soul Connection gives a new meaning to raw funk & soul with their new album ‘Skimming the Skum’. In Europe, but also in countries like Japan and USA, they got a lot of attention because of their energetic, heavy raw music on record and on stage. Speedometer

UK's premier funk band started out as a quartet gigging in small clubs in the Southeast of England in 1999, playing classic funk tunes by artists such as The Meters and The JB's. The band soon expanded, adding the now renowned horn section (The Rev Horns) and vocalists (The Speedettes) in 2001, which has enabled them to deliver the powerhouse deep funk sound they're known for today.

In 2000, the first single was released "Soul Safari" on Soul Fire Records and soon followed several other releases by other labels. Each of the limited run 45 singles sold out to a rapidly growing funk audience.
Three years later the band joined forces with Blow it Hard Records to record the first Speedometer LP. THIS IS SPEEDOMETER (VOL.I) which blended their love of heavy deep funk with Soul and fused this with Latin grooves that gave the eagerly awaiting funk fans and DJ's one of the best new authentic funk albums since the 1970's.

2005 saw the follow up album "THIS IS SPEEDOMETER (VOL. 2)".This second volume proved the bands credentials in delivering unrivalled heavyweight funk grooves and super-soul vocals from soul diva Ria Currie and the Speedettes. The funky re-work of Beyonce’s “Work it out” has been one of the most successful new funk 45’s to date and in the top 10 of most funk/soul DJ’s around the globe. 2006 saw Freestyle Records in the UK release “Diggin Deeper”. A compilation of all of Speedometer’s early 7" 45 releases in one place on CD for the very first time. It also saw them back in Big Noise Studios to start laying tracks for the next album "4 Flights Up" due out in early 2007 on Freestyle Records. Over the years, Speedometer has worked with many of the US funk legends including Sir Joe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Sharon Jones, James Bell (The Highlighters), Lee Fields, Billy Wooten and most recently, gigging and cutting two tracks in the studio with Robert Moore. This Is Speedometer Vol.I (Blow It Hard 2003)

Speedometer is one of the 3 bands most likely to deliver the first new-funk offering that would have the right ingredients to transcend this niche market of enthusiasts, obsessives and occasional buyers, crossing over into the wider soul/funk/jazz audience and beyond. This LP is frankly the best collection of new 'authentic' soul, funk scorchers from any artists - ressurected or new to the 'scene'. They seem to have taken the standards raised by Daptone over the last 2 years and given it another funky foot forward. Recorded with a personnel of 17 musicians and singers the LP is a masterpiece that shifts from first class Marva Whitney, Mary ‘Queenie’ Lyons influenced sister-soul screamers (Wait Up, Just Keep On, What Am I Gonna Do) to laid back Meters-esque grooves (Mullet) and onto hard Jazz-Dance Latin fusions (Episode In Palmetto) with spectacular fluidity. The LP contains a surprising deep soul ballad "All I Ever Need" and "Episode In Palmetto" is one of the highlights , a hard Jazz-Dancer that takes 6 hours of the best 'Out To Lunch' sessions and condenses it into 3 minutes 16 seconds of furious Afro Cuban/Latin percussion and flute infused grooves. "What Am I Gonna Do" is the kind of mid-tempo, sister funk that if it were a recently unearthed old 45 would have the collectors scrambling for a copy like newly born puppys to their mothers teats. Expect to see the future-anthem "Grow Bag" on many a play list to come. Funk recording of the decade? Certainly a very serious contender, utterly outstanding work.

The second long player from one of the UK's oldest funk outfits, very little has changed from their first long player, they are still playing their sophisticated mix of hard as nails funk with elements of Latin jazz-dance with very strong leanings to the stripped back sound of the Meters.

There's some nice new funk worthy of dance floor action here "Dapper Dan" sounds like a lost outtake from the JB's circa "Pass The Peas", "Work It Out" while not as downright saucy as the original Beyonce sung classic it should nevertheless get some fun kicking off! A very welcome return from one of the UK's leading live funk acts.

Speedometer get better and better with each new record -- and this time around, they've risen to the upper level of grooving in the deep funk underground -- sitting nicely next to the best from the Daptone, Soul Fire, and Tru Thoughts camp with an approach that's heavy on the drums, filled with funky guitars, and topped with plenty of horns! Kon & Amir , DJ Muro - The Kings of Diggin' (Rapster 2006)

A two-disc album of rare tracks found and made available thanks to the crate-digging work (and then the subsequent selection process) of Kon & Amir and DJ Muro, The Kings of Diggin' is a good example of why so many DJs spend hours and hours in record stores, looking for obscure, out of print vinyl. Both Kon and Amir, who compiled and mixed the first disc, give brief explanations of their tracks in the liner notes (it must be an outdated version, however, as the Tyrone & Carr and Soseme Makonde songs are missing information, while there are two, the Trinidad Tripoli Steelband and the TnT Band, for which Amir gives nice descriptions -- though neither actually shows up on the record), and the music varies from Brazilian funk to jazz but never steps too far out of the range of something that seems like it could easily be sampled by hip-hop producers and that an MC could rhyme over. The focus, of course, is on the beat (made not only by drums but also bass and guitar), the same idea that is also heard on disc two, which, unlike the first one, generally consists of one- to two-minute song clips (38 in all) mixed expertly together by Japan's DJ Muro. Again, the selection stays mostly within the jazz-funk realm, but there are also ventures into R&B (Tony Middleton's "Return to Spanish Harlem"), easy pop (the Bob Crewe Generation's "Menage a Trois"), disco (the Disco Fox's "The Fox"), and Latin (Palmeira's "Tapajos"). Together, The Kings of Diggin' is enough to make nearly anyone -- DJ or not -- run to the nearest record store and start looking for new things to add to his or her collection.

This excellent collection as well as containing some of Warners biggest hits ("Clean Up Woman"/Betty Wright, "Rock Steady"/Aretha Franklin,"Right Place,Wrong Time"/Dr John) contains some neglected gems that ought to be heard.In particular "Stanga" by Little Sister is a belter, little sister being Rose Stewart part of Sly's extended band/family. There are two Family Stone covers, a magnificent version of "Everyday People" by Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band,and a version of "Sing a simple song" by The Noble Knights-led by King Curtis, but with all the Atlantic House band luminaries in attendance as well. Then there's a remake of a Watts Band backing track dubbed by Society's bag, 1 minute 25 seconds of a track called "Stroke 75" by Tower of Power and a stunning track called "Kissing my Love" by Cold Blood. There's no room to mention the Bobby Byrd track, or the one by Allan Toussaint, but I ought to give a big shout for "Somebody in the World for you" by The Mighty Hannibal which somehow managed not to get much airplay first time around. Sure, a lot of this stuff is obscure, but it's GOOD obscure, not just padding to the hits contained herein, and it rattles along in a joyful urgent way. Looking for something from left field that makes you feel good? Get those flares out!This could be worth investing in.

They certainly got the title right on this one -- as the set's overflowing with killer funk that's absolutely the best of the best!
