The Haggis Horns

The Haggis Horns - Hot Damn (2007)

The nucleus of the group, Jason Rae (husband of Corinne Bailey Rae), Atholl Ransome and Malcolm Strachan have become the horn section of choice for the world's top artists. Currently on tour as part of Mark Ronson's band, the horns can name Amy Winehouse, The New Mastersounds, Lou Donaldson, Corinne Bailey Rae & Nightmares On Wax among the selection of the artists that have called on them to lend their lungs to shows or recordings.

With guitarist Ben Barker taking on production duties and the addition of some of the UKs finest jazz and funk musicians including Cinematic Orchestra drummer Luke Flowers, the Haggis sound is at the forefront of the burgeoning new funk scene. This album sums up everything about the band: at it's core, hard-hitting dance
floor funk, (Hot Damn! / The Bump), but also taking in reggae (Eskimo), loose-limbed instrumental hip hop (Huffalump) and slamming afrobeat (The Traveller / Tribe Vibes). Add in a couple of cover versions that have been popular additions to the band's legendary live shows (Enter The Haggis / Who's Gonna Take The Weight?), and you have the funkiest sound this side of The JBs.

that's a groovy one indeed! ark is right, don't miss it all you groovy motherfuckers!

I particularly enjoyed track #7, huffalump. Only a sick mind(like ark's mind) would characterized that one as loose-limbed instrumetnal hip hop!

Well, I didn't miss it and I'm so glad.
Not since Sonny Rollins introduced the world to the joys of jazz bagpipes have I been so proud of Scotland's contribution to music - it almost makes up for The Proclaimers (I said ALMOST). Of course there was the Average White Band but apart from Pick up the Pieces I don't think they ever really fulfilled their potential
