Galactic

Originally formed in 1994 as an octet (under the name Galactic Prophylactic) and including singer Chris Lane and guitarist Rob Gowen, the group was soon pared down to an instrumental sextet of: guitarist Jeff Raines, bassist Robert Mercurio, drummer Stanton Moore, saxophonist Ben Ellman and Hammond organist Rich Vogel, later adding Theryl DeClouet on vocals.

The group was started when Raines and Mercurio, childhood friends from the Washington D.C. area, moved to New Orleans together to attend college at Tulane and Loyola Universities, and became enamored of the local funk scene, populated by such legendary acts as The Meters and Dirty Dozen Brass Band and inspired by local legends such as Professor Longhair. There they teamed with noted New Orleans drummer Stanton Moore, saxophonist/harmonica (now producer) Ben Ellman, and Rich Vogel. In 2004, the band parted ways with vocalist DeClouet, and now continue as an instrumental group. They have been releasing ground breaking albums consistently since 1996. The lasted album includes a who's who's of underground MC's called From the Corner to the Block (anti)
Over the years, the band's sound has evolved from organic New Orleans funk to a more modern style, incorporating elements of hip hop, electronica, fusion, and jazz. This change has been largely characterized by the increased use of electronic effects on guitar, bass, saxophone, and drums. Drummer Stanton Moore uses phrase samplers to sample a rhythm which he can then play over, producing intricate and layered drum sounds. Ben Ellman, saxophonist and harmonica player, often distorts his instruments to the degree that they sound similar to an electric guitar.

Keb Darge's Legendary Deep Funk Vol. 1, 2 & 3

Keb Darge is a Scottish DJ of the genres of Northern Soul and Deep Funk music, and is possibly the best-known DJ of such genres.
The legendary out-spoken Scotsman has been around the nothern soul & funk scene since the start and began his career as a dancer at the Wigan Casino. Soon he started collecting and buying Nothern Soul in UK and from regular trips to the US and was starting to play around and in Wigan (including the casino). After the casino closed in 1981 he had gained a respectful reputation as a DJ.
He moved to London at the age of 22 and decided to start living a normal life and quit DJ'ing, but was quickly playing Nothern-soul again due to heavy demand by old wigan promoters. He brought the scene to London and drew the nothern punters that had moved to London after the wigan scene dissolved. After a few years, the nothern scene faded, Keb sold his music collection but he still had a loft filled with 'junk' music (according to himself) that he had picked up in the states that was to-be classified as "Deep Funk" later on.
So in 1989 house music arrived in the UK, and Keb decided to play the funk grooves after a trip to Japan. He managed to get a regular night at a acid-jazz club called 'The Wagclub' and he finished there after a period. And around 1992/93 he met fellow collector Snowboy on the first funk-only night in London called 'Deep Funk', named by Keb (that he later used as a name to describe the sound) but arranged by the owners of the club (Club Ormones).
After a time, Snowboy and Keb wanted to push the funk sound further and they decided to start their own night in an old restaurant. The nights failed due to the domination of house and shut down after a few months.
Not so long after, they got a tip for a new location that was a strip-club in Soho called Madame Jo-Jo's. The location was perfect and they manage to arrange a weekly night to start with. The nights took off fast and are today the leading funk nights in London. Later on the strip nights closed and the venue became a full time music club.
Today he holds a weekly spot at the club (Legendary Deep Funk nights), traveling around the world DJ'ing, and running the label Kay-Dee Records with Kenny Dope.
He has achieved legendary status by far with a 60's & 70's musical knowledge second to none that is perfectly reflected on his BBE compilations.

The multi-instrumentalist funk supremo that is Will Holland returns with a second recording from his full band, The Quantic Soul Orchestra. QSO have bedded in their sound through a series of barnstorming live appearances over the last couple of years, and Pushin' On sees them at the very top of their game. It's hard not to be effusive about an album as good as this, which sees Holland's remarkable song-writing and feel for the genre reflected in a satisfyingly gritty, low-fi seventies funk sound. There are no album tracks on here--every one's a winner--but special mention should go to the blistering cover of Mr Scruff's dancefloor banger, "Get A Move On" and to the incomparable Alice Russell: it takes some guts for a female vocalist to cover a timeless Nina Simone song like "Feeling Good", but the Brighton diva succeeds in spades, breathing new life into a much-loved classic. Between his Quantic, Quantic Soul Orchestra and Limp Twins projects, Will Holland has proved to be an extremely gifted and prolific musician and tunesmith, and this is his best work to date. More importantly, he's funkier than George Clinton's platforms: sitting still through this album is not a viable option.

Mojo Club

One of the most tasteful clubs in hamburg is the "Mojo Club". It opened up in 1991 and had several side activities like a shop, a lounging club and a record series.

The starting point was the music, from the beginning they called it "Dancefloor Jazz". It is jazz music from the 60's and 70's, that is very danceable. When they started to play that kind of music, it was new in the club and dance scene, because in the 60's that style of music hardly found its way over the ocean from america and in the 70's it were mostly intellectuals who listened concentrated to the virtuosly playing musicians instead of dancing. So they had to build their audience up by organising a lot of parties in different locations until they felt the time was right to open a club of their own.

They found a room on the famous "Reeperbahn", which is the main street of Hamburgs red-light- and also the amusement- and partydistrict. Before it was a musical instrument shop, so they had to improvise a club. They rent a sound-system and installed some slide projectors with images of 60's jazz musicians to produce the right mood. First they only opend on saturdays but soon found some like minded dj's to do the friday that concentrated on a more modern aspect of jazz: electric jazz.

They called the club "Mojo-Club". Mojo is somekind of positive magic in the carribean voodoo-cult. The term was familiar because it appeared in the jazz-music, so they took it as the name for the club. A friend of them, Marion Schnelle, did a logo, and for the flyers they had some rudimentary rules like "never use serif-fonts" as a first step of visual identity.

In 92 the Mojo-crew opend a shop where they sold old and rare records and also clothes, club couture mostly from england that you couldn't get somewhere else in Hamburg. Their style was mod-orientaded and also reached to old-school Adidas stuff. Even a hair-cutter was included in the shop, so you could get everything you need for a satisfied clubbers lifestyle!

That year they also released the first Mojo Club - dancefloor jazz sampler. It contained unknown songs from the 60's to early 70's by artists like Jimmy Smith, Roy Ayers, James Brown, Kool And The Gang and Nina Simone. The record was a big success, so it became a series, The club became very famous, people started waiting in a queue and the dj's made a tour through germany.

1995/96 times changed. The shop was closed and the Mojo people cared more about the music and the club again. Drum and bass came, the Mojo Club invited nearly all of the Metalheadz djs and the new loungin' music of Kruder and Dorfmeister who also played made Mojo-clubbing fresh again. A second record series ("Electric Mojo") was started with now two volumes and two remix albums. Raphael Marionneau developed a strict corporate identity for the mojo club that gave the club a strong identity. He also does his own club-night at the mojo club. On wednesdays it's time for "Le Cafe Abstrait". Raphael carries a lot of sofas into the club and plays relaxing chill-out music.

Next to the Mojo Club was a chinese family restaurant, the "Mandarin". Instead of selling and serving food the restaurant was in businesses like selling travels, copying asian soft-porns and cutting hair in their restaurant rooms. Someday in 1999 the family suddenly disappeared and left the rooms like they were. the Mojo people immediatly felt like using those rooms for something special. They built "a club without dancing" into the large frontroom called "The Mandarin". Chouches and small wooden walls that divide the seat-groups but not the room in small units.

Cool retro modern furniture with a lot of chinese noble-kitsch, like a giant dragon on the ceiling with red glowing eyes. They serve exquisite drinks and play a stimulating lounge music. After a year the Mandarin was so overcrowded, that they decided to open a backroom as a more private club, as quiet oasis. You need a special key-label to access it, therefore it's more relaxed and if you want you can play video games that are integrated very nice into the furniture.

Two weeks ago a third club was opend up. It's called "Mandalay". This time it's again a club with a dancefloor, but the name, the styling and the music are closer to the lounge feeling of the Mandarin. We checked it out last week-end and were astonished how many people were there, although they didn't do any advertisement like flyers or posters for it. leif told us, that they have two more rooms to open there, so we're very curious how they will look like...

Budos Band II

Like the deadly scorpion of the album's cover, The Budos Band's second release, The Budos Band II, creeps stealthily over the hot desert sand. It is with unmistakable purpose that each beat of the music drives forth, one footstep of many to carry the Scorpion toward it's meaning. With his tail arched high in readiness, he maneuvers patiently under the scorching desert sun, and chooses his prey. He strikes without warning and without remorse. The venom of his sting, true to its reason; his victim, ever-intoxicated.

With it's twenty-two legs, three horns, and hallucinogenic venom, The Budos Band, the un-heralded emperors of Instrumental Staten Island Afro-Soul, continue to rule. The band commands their listeners to follow them on their second journey into the depths of their poisonous vision. While their debut album was itself heralded as a groundbreaking exploration of funk, afro-beat and soul music, few could predict that their second effort would not only match but surpass the realm of mind-expansion embodied on their first sessions. Through ten exciting new instrumentals recorded live at Daptone's House of Soul in Bushwick, Brookyln, The Budos Band pours themes at once resonant and ethereal over Herculean rhythms.

The Budos Band (2005)

The Budos Band is the quintessence of Staten Island Soul. Their exciting new afro-influenced take on instrumental music has been captivating listeners at gigs across the Tri-State area. Eleven pieces in all, their group consists of drums, bass, guitar, electric organ, two trumpets, baritone saxophone, and a percussion section employing bongos, congas, tambourine, guiro, clave, shekere and cowbell. Their music has been described as “compelling”, “unbridled”, “psychedelic”, “innovative”, and above all “soulful.” However, like many majestic things, their sound had humble beginnings.
The core of the band met as youths while all participating in an after school jazz ensemble at the Richmond Ave. Community Center, in Staten Island, New York. It wasn’t long before their common hunger for the rougher stripped down sounds of Soul Music brought them together for late night ferry rides into Manhattan, where they would sneak in the back door of the No Moore Club downtown to hear bands like Antibalas, the Sugarman Three, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. It was there, in that basement hothouse packed with the only the hippest James Brown fanatics and Fela Kuti disciples, where the kernels of instrumental Afro-Soul were first sown into the fertile minds of these talented young men. Kernels which would later germinate and grow into the roots of their strong unique sound. After meeting resistance from the band director about the direction they were trying to take the music, they left the Community Center to form Los Barbudos, (spanish for “the bearded ones”) a name which was later trimmed to The BudosBand after one of the boys shaved. With the recruitment of a few horn players from the neighboring borough of Brooklyn, the band began to practice regularly, exploring the outer cosmic boundaries of afro-beat and soul music from the safety of their tiny concrete rehearsal space on Sand St. As they learned and grew together, their music matured, expanding and settling into a groove as deep and as broad as the Hudson Bay itself. By the time they had arranged a chance to play for a Daptone A&R man, their sound had hardened to a diamond. They were signed on the spot and scheduled to go into the studio immediately for a recording session where they would proceed to cut a full length album in the better part of three nights.
Their debut, self-titled album on Daptone Records is hard evidence of their eruption onto today’s Funk and Soul scene. The dramatic peels of brass and sax poured so liberally over sparsely orchestrated rhythm arrangements intone moods which are in one instant hopeful and sinister, urgent and nostalgic, buoyant and depthful beyond measure. The record opens with a lone prowling bass line that circles it’s listener four times before the fierce calculating rhythms of the drums and percussion join in. It is not, of course, until the barks and howls of the horns join the fray when we are able to hear the full spectrum of the band’s voice. The musicians claim the secret to their enormous sound is a selfless approach to rhythm: each man finding his own place and purpose in the greater landscape of the measure. However, any observant listener can hear that it is something far more simple and rare that elevates their sound beyond the sphere of cognitive reason and into that far greater realm of pure feeling: The Budos Band have Soul, on the inside. And it’s strong!!!
